The easy way to get your ads on Android
May 4, 2009 – 8:17 pmI realize this news is a few months old, but I’m using it to kick off a revitalization of the blog - there are finally business oportunities to be had on Android! (Apart from selling apps on the store… )
Google updated AdWords back on December 8, 2008 to target full HTML mobile browsers, which brings advertisers the first and most simple option to target Android phone users (albeit, only searchers). There are now over 1million of them! Now we can see what people are searching for when using mobile devices, whereas previously all data was lumped together in the AdWords reporting.
To gain visibility to only the Android / iPhone users, you would just build campaigns to target only full HTML browsers (set at the campaign level).
The mobile community of developers and entreprenuers still awaits the first mature Android ad network (at least to my knowledge, I did just see AdMob has something going, but their ads seem to be pure interruption ads). This will develop with time. Our network, Ads On Android, is still in the developing stage, but we are accepting inqueries from interested parties, both developers and businesses.
The key is to not let privacy and intrusion get too out of hand like this article fears. In time, I believe the community will produce an ecosystem that creates value for all, especially the user.

I don’t see how you can consider AdMob ads as interruption ads. Your app must reserve an area for AdMob ads to appear, and the ads refresh in that area once a minute or so. They don’t get in users way in any way.

To be honest, I’ve never seen an AdMob ad in action, so I admit, I was just picking on them
I reasoned that they were interruption ads because they seem to be display ads with little relevance to the application or activity of the user. Let me know if I’m wrong. Definitely not as good as Google search or even content ads.
What are some examples of apps out there running AdMob ads?
I guess my holy grail Android ad would be a mobile geo-targeted ad that constantly updates with user activities and location. I don’t know if our hardware or software is to that point yet. At least not when I don’t get a good satellite GPS shot or connection from T-Mobile.

I think the word the author was looking for is “distraction”. I am a developer who has recently uploaded an app to the android market which is admob enabled. I am very displeased right now with the quality of the adds. Its not that they are not working or not real, they are just are not relevent. I put in keywords related to my app (loans, financing etc) and I start getting ads for android dating apps and Jaguar cars. These are not really the kinds of ads I was hoping for. Ads that are actually relavant to the type of ad I have would actually aid to the value of the app while these ads are only distractions. I have given up on admob and am now looking for an alternate solution.

If the ads are not intrusive to the user experience I like featuring them. However, not if they aren’t targeted.
I hate the flash ads that interrupt my reading, and take up my entire screen to tell me about some stupid service I’m not interested in. I’ll make sure I never use that site just for being annoying..
